How about pumpkin carving for the whole family?


Newburyport is the perfect place to celebrate the spooky Halloween season for both kids and adults—so many things to do in one beautiful, safe, walkable little city. Here is an overview of 2021 happenings, and we plan to increase the number each year. Many of these events are held outdoors!

Maudslay is Haunted:

October 23-24

Bring the family for a one-hour walk through eerie vignettes, spooky sketches and haunting scenes at this all time favorite Halloween event held outdoors in the beautiful Maudslay State park.  Don’t worry about the little ones being too frightened—they’ll be given a magic acorn to hold tight if they are scared.  



September 29-Oct 2

Your favorite Poe poems and stories—including The Raven and The Cask of Amontillado—come to life at RiverwalkBrewing in Newburyport and the Gedney House in Salem under lantern light at this all-ages, mostly outdoors show. 


The Legend of Sleepy Hollow 

October 1-3

A fast-moving, funny and extremely suspenseful telling of the much beloved tale.Plus, there’ll be music, dancing and ghost stories told by a talented cast of29 adult and student actors.


Spookley the Square Pumpkin, the Musical  

October 2-3

The family-friendly story of a square pumpkin living in a round pumpkin patch, shunned by the other pumpkins until he is befriended by Edgar, Allan and Poe, three hilarious spiders.


Halloween Monkey Butt Improv

It’s part improv on steroids, part theme-based shenanigans (in this case, Halloween), part unscripted mayhem and more outrageous entertainment than, well, a barrel of monkeys! It may not be for the faint-of-heart, but Monkey Butt Improv is guaranteed to be a fun-filled evening – and admission is free!


The Spirits of Oak Hill  

October 19

A youth theater and youth dance collaboration held outdoors at Oak Hill Cemetery. Bring blankets or a chair!


Evil Dead the Musical  

October 22-31

Five college students go to an abandoned cabin in the woods and accidentally unleash an evil force that turns them all into demons.  Blood flies. Limbs are dismembered.  Demons tell bad jokes… and all to music.  


Witches' Night Out

October 22

From 6:00PM – 9:00PM, the streets of downtown Newburyport and the Tannery will be filled with witches, ghosts, vampires and other Halloween characters for Witches' Night Out! This adult-friendly event is a Halloween invitation night coupled with merchant hospitality, seasonal Halloween treats, shopping, and more! Attendees are urged to come in costume.


Full Moon “Goosebumps” Story Slam

October 23

The next Full MoonStory Slam is our chance to gather as friends – virtually, of course – and share true stories from our lives. Story slammers will tell a 5-minute short story based on the evening’s theme, perfect for the Halloween season: “Goosebumps.”


Pumpkin Palooza

October 23

A fun, family event starting at 2:00. Activities include pumpkin carving and decorating contest, hayride, kids yoga, graveyard tours, costume parade and trick-or-treating, live music and beer garden. Bring your own pumpkin or use one of ours to carve and/or decorate.


Family Jacko’Lantern Carving  

October 24

Pumpkins and tools provided!  Learn how to transfer your design ideas onto a pumpkin and safely carve using tools appropriate for children over 6.


Rocky Horror PictureShow  

October 29

In this cult classic film with rock songs and elaborate dances, sweethearts Brad and Janet are stuck with a flat tire during a storm and discover the eerie mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite scientist.  As their innocence is lost, they meet a houseful of wild characters including “Rocky.”  Prop bags full of stuff to throw are included with your ticket!


Pumpkin Carving Workshop for Teens and Tweens

Pumpkins and tools provided! Learn to transfer the idea in your head to a design on a pumpkin and try out really cool carving tools.  Pizza included!


Possession, A Once-Banned Horror Film

October 29-30

After its release in the UK in 1981, Possession was banned and subsequently shown in the U.S.
only in a dramatically edited 81-minute version. Here, a newly restored version of the
stunningly choreographed nightmare of a marriage unraveling is presented in its full form.


Downtown Bonus Trick or Treat

From 4-5pm families with small children are encouraged to come show off their Halloween costumes and enjoy treats from local Downtown and Tannery retailers.  This is a wonderful opportunity for parents with very small children to ease their way into trick or treating while introducing them to Newburyport’s fun Halloween events!


War of the Worlds

October 30

Eighty three years ago, on October 30, 1938,  Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater broadcast a version of H.G. Wells ‘War of the World’ that set off a panic across the country.  Join the TASN Vintage Radio Players as we recreate that broadcast for you, live and in-person at the Firehouse Center for the Performing Arts.


Appleton is Haunted

October 31

Theater in the Open’s notorious haunting is coming to Appleton Farms! Join our cast of the undead for a half-hour walk through eerie vignettes, spooky sketches and haunting scenes, all surrounded by the changing colors and autumn grandeur of the farm. Bring the whole family for a variety of tricks and treats, this event is intended for all ages.
