Custom House Museum's Annual Life Ring Tree

Intro

Festive dance and theater presentations, storefronts alive with cheerful decorations, and a glorious tree standing tall in Market Square--enchanting Newburyport is the perfect place to rekindle holiday traditions and make new memories with friends and family! Members of the Newburyport Arts Collective have pulled out all the stops to create joyful arts and cultural events to help you celebrate the most magical time of the year.

November 27-December 23, Newburyport Art Association Holiday Exhibit and Sale.

This huge holiday event with over 100 artists participating will feature a variety of media and price ranges for all art lovers.   Look for ceramic globe ornaments for sale, painted and decorated by artist members.  Almost all works (starting at $28) can be purchased either in person at the gallery or through their online shop.

November 28, Santa Parade and Tree Lighting

As the holiday season approaches, Santa & Mrs. Claus arrive in the most fitting way for this seaport town... by US Coast Guard boat! Welcome Santa on the Sunday after Thanksgiving as he and Mrs. Claus dock at the boardwalk and begin to parade through downtown Newburyport, then gather in Market Square for the annual Christmas tree lighting and carols.

December 1, Holiday Wreath Decorating Evening at Tinkerhaus. 

Grab some friends and join Angela Belanger for some great tips and tricks for decorating wreaths. Seasonal snacks and sips provided as well as all tools, ribbons, decorations and wreaths.

A family-friendly dance and theatrical collaboration between Joppa Dance Company and The Firehouse Center for the Arts that takes you on a journey with the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future.

December 3, 10 and 17 (6-9pm), Invitation Shopping Nights. 

A perfect family event or girls night out!  Enjoy merchant hospitality, live entertainment, shopping, and dining in beautiful and festive downtown Newburyport, The Tannery, Merrimac Place, and Horton's Yard.  Spend your evening strolling from shop to shop as you stock up on holiday gifts while enjoying complimentary munchies and beverages offered by local merchants.

December 3-17, The Custom House Museum Maritime Holiday Tree. 

The enormous Maritime Tree made from rope rigging is erected in the museum’s back yard.  It is adorned with dozens of one-of-a-kind festive “wreaths” which dozens of local organizations and families have created from decorative maritime life rings.  Check out their website for the schedule of events from caroling to hot coco nights and more.  Any individual or organization may purchase a life ring to support the museum and then decorate it to add to the tree!

December 3-19, Elf the Musical. 

A Firehouse live production in nearby Andover, this modern-day holiday classic is sure to make everyone embrace their inner elf. After all, the best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear.

December 3-19, Santa’s Workshop. 

Bring the family to Newburyport's Brown Square to visit Santa in his traditional workshop, share your wish list, and snap a photo with Mr. Claus! Then enjoy strolling around beautiful downtown Newburyport which will be decorated for the holiday season.

December 10-19, A Nutcracker Panto. 

Theater in the Open’s annual holiday panto returns to the Firehouse Center for the Arts in December with A Nutcracker Panto! A goofy spin on Tchaikovsky’s classic ballet, join Clara for an unforgettable Christmas, filled with pratfalls, snowballs, and plenty of laughs. Whether a Theater in the Open Panto has been part of your holiday tradition in the past, or you’re joining us for the first time, we are thrilled to welcome you to the Firehouse for some holiday cheer.

Tiny Tim’s Can Drive is back this year! Bring in non-perishable canned and boxed goods to any performance of A Nutcracker Panto, and we will donate the collected goods to the Pettengill House in Salisbury.

Dec. 11, Share the Warmth City-Wide Hot Cocoa Stands.

Join Newburyport Youth Services in building community through cocoa! Visit stands throughout the city for some delicious hot chocolate and get to know local community members. Some stands will be collecting donations to local charities.

December 15, Youth Winter Craft Show and Sale

This juried market of local youth artists, makers, crafters and builders features one-of-a-kind items you will not see anywhere else, from paintings to woodworking. Come shop for the holidays and support the work of young artists. Newburyport Senior Center, 331 High St, 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.

December 16, Winter Sing.

The Greater Newburyport Children's Chorus presents three of their ensembles (grades 2-12) in this free event at 6:30 pm, Central Congregational Church. All are welcome!
